Gila Community College Achieves Independent Accreditation Status

Gila Community College gains independent status from the Higher Learning Commission, ending its long-standing reliance on Eastern Arizona College.

Gila Community College (GCC) in Arizona has secured full independent accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The decision ends a decades-long arrangement where the institution operated under the accreditation of Eastern Arizona College (EAC). Transition to Autonomy The attainment of independent status grants the college authority over its own academic programs, financial aid distribution, and administrative governance. GCC serves Gila County through primary campuses in Payson and Globe, supported by several regional learning centers. The accreditation follows a multi-year process involving financial audits and administrative restructuring to meet HLC standards. Operational Impact As a standalone accredited entity, GCC is now eligible to apply for federal grants and funding independently of EAC. This change permits the college to develop curricula specifically tailored to the economic requirements of Gila County. Previously, all academic credits and degree conferrals were managed through EAC’s administrative framework.
